Statement

I was born in the Piacenza countryside, where I still live and work in my studio, a barn conversion. Cows grazing, fields of wheat, centuries-old trees are the scenery of my youth and which are part of me.

The infinitely large and the infinitely small, the importance of water and earth, the element of magic, poetry and the encounter with the absolute are the themes linked to nature that I have explored and that I continue to explore.
Travelling to cities abroad and encountering different cultures have led me to extend my research to the human being, who is not represented in my works, but who, through his absence, becomes an integral part of the proposed paths: his fragility, incommunicability, loneliness, impotence, the relationship that binds the man-artist to art itself, the need for an introspective space, a place outside the world.

I like to challenge the perimeter limits of artistic research, by creating settings where the viewer is involved; Whether they are cycles of figurative or abstract works, I use an artistic technique that favours painting with enamels, acrylics and more recently, spray cans. I also use other types of materials, different from time to time, that I find or that are processed during the creative process.

Visionary by nature, I also love working with objects, sometimes broken and transformed by adding and subtracting materials, to the point of distorting their meaning, to induce reflection.
Some of my works are an open contamination of media, from painting to installation to video art.

Biography

Brigitta Rossetti was born in Piacenza in 1974. Rossetti graduated in Modern Literature from the University of Pavia and specialised in digital communication, obtaining her Master in Energy Management (MEM) at the Milan Polytechnic.

The world of literature, essential verse, the epigram, lyrical fragments and futurist literature, all have contributed to her formation. Rossetti has been critically acknowledged for her writing of free verse poems. Rossetti was also the co-author of the book ‘Investing in China’, where she curated the cultural premises concerning the reconciliation between East and West, in 2006.

In 2001 Rossetti spent a year in London, where she absorbed punk influences, together with the suggestive romanticism in the landscapes of William Turner and breathed in the art in the city’s sparkling atmosphere.
Later she had an enlightening encounter with Maria Luisa De Romans (1920-2018), globetrotting artist, friend of Andy Warhol, central figure of abstract expressionism in the 1960s and 70s.

Rossetti collaborated in the creation of an archive of documents and images of the artist. Rossetti’s artistic formation also took place in Austria and Germany, where she took part in workshops with famous artists: the most significant ones being Peter Keizer at the Akademie der Kunste in Hamburg, and the Zhou Brothers from China, the Polish video artist Anna Konik and the German sculptor Asta Gröting at the International Akademie Fur Bildende Kunst Salzburg, from 2007 to 2011.The artist consolidated an international approach to art, and it was in those places of openness and contemporaneity that she developed a propensity for using mixed techniques and integrating different types of materials into her paintings and installations.

She took part in the Arte Padova fair in 2011, where she was awarded the second prize in the Art Talent installation category with the works belonging to the Torfi Zoomorfi cycle.
At that time Rossetti was also invited to the artist-in-residence programme at the Zhou Brothers Art Center in Chicago where she met emerging and established artists, with whom she began collaborating and joined the 33 Contemporary Art Gallery.

These were intense years of searching for a balance between figuration and abstraction, in which the artist deepened the definition of space and the relationship between it and the work of art.
In Italy, Rossetti joined the Barbara Paci gallery and
participated in events in Pietrasanta (Art Collector Night 1) and fairs such as Arte Istanbul 2015 and Arte Verona 2014, where she was a finalist in the Arte Icona award.

In 2014 she took part in the Asolo Biennale curated by Giovanni Faccenda, winning the first prize for painting, with the work Flowers of Auschwitz, now in the Civic Museum of Asolo.
In the same period, the artist collaborated with the art critic Ivan Quaroni in the creation of the three-person exhibition Ipotesi di un’isola with Claudia Haberkern and Kudo Masahide. She also held the solo exhibition ‘Personal Effects’, at the Fondazione della Banca Popolare di Lodi, whose collection includes her works Sogni di pietra (still life exercise).

Since 2014-15 the artist has been working mainly in Taiwan at the Bluerider Art Gallery, where she has been involved in an intense fair and exhibition programme.

In 2018 she was invited to the Pop Revolution exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore curated by Philippe Daverio and was among the award-winning artists.

In 2020 she was one of the finalists at the Arte Laguna Prize, and launched her first solo show in Milan with the Bianchi Zardin Contemporary gallery.

In 2021 Rossetti was a finalist in the painting section of the Artrightprize, curated by Luca Beatrice, Marta Giani and Maria Chiara Valacchi and collaborated with Domenico De Chirico in the realisation of virtual exhibitions such as Flowering and Other Poems and La Recherche. In the same year she inaugurated her solo exhibition with a catalogue at the Biffi Arte gallery in Piacenza entitled Natural Seeing, curated by Chiara Gatti, dedicating her intense pictorial work produced during the lockdown to her city, Piacenza.
Some of Brigitta Rossetti’s works belong to the Mim museum collection in San Pietro in Cerro, in the province of Piacenza.
